We will take stock of how Sub-Saharan Africa has fared during the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss the green shoots we are seeing, particularly in East Africa, and why we believe this region will have a relatively brisk recovery.

Panel discussion: Nigeria fintech – what is the next frontier?

12:30 – 13:30 (London)
15:30 – 16:30 (Moscow)

Nigeria has fast risen to become one of Africa’s most notable fintech hotspots, attracting substantial capital from leading global investors and fintech players across the US, Europe and Asia. On this panel, we will bring together some of the most prominent companies and investors in the market to discuss where we currently stand in the evolution of fintech and, more importantly, the next frontier. Payments is a well-told story but blockchain, agency banking and many other new verticals are gaining significant momentum and new-use cases for the consumer, which we hope to explore from an operating and investing viewpoint.

Spotlight on North Africa: Macroeconomic update on Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia and Q&A discussion

12:00 – 12:30 (London)
15:00 – 15:30 (Moscow)

North Africa is leading Africa’s second industrialisation wave – but 2020 has been a blow to growth. Fiscal deficits have widened again. Unemployment remains problematic. Who can bounce back best?
Speaker:
• Charles Robertson – Global Chief Economist, Head of Macro Strategy Unit, Renaissance Capital

Panel discussion: Egypt fintech – a hidden gem with untapped potential

12:30 – 13:30 (London)
15:30 – 16:30 (Moscow)

Egypt’s fintech landscape has produced the first listed unicorn in Africa and is set to produce even more listed fintech vehicles in the near future. We expect that by end-2021, Egypt will have the most listed fintech plays for investors to access. This panel will bring together a few of the top private market investors that were early to spot some of the most exciting fintech opportunities on the ground, as well as some of the major fintech players in the ecosystem, to discuss the evolution of the sector, where we are today, enabling pillars of the underlying momentum, and what the future looks like.
Speakers:
• Ashraf Sabry – Founder and CEO, Fawry
• Ayman El Dessouky – CEO and Board Member, Ebtikar
• Hossam Abou Moussa – Partner, Actis
• Moataz El Sayed – CEO, Khales

Spotlight on CIS+: Macroeconomic update on Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Georgia and Q&A discussion

12:00 – 12:30 (London)
15:00 – 15:30 (Moscow)

This presentation will highlight why the CIS+ space offers a range of appealing opportunities for investors in the medium term. Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia and other countries in the region have largely withstood the coronavirus pandemic with moderate costs and maintained decent credit quality thanks to a strong starting point, the structural strengths of the economies and decent policy responses. Sofya will discuss economic forecasts and what factors will weigh on the performance of the CIS+ markets in 2021.
Speaker:
• Sofya Donets – Economist, Russia and CIS+, Renaissance Capital

Panel discussion: Playing the Russian consumer – is the time right?

12:30 – 13:30 (London)
15:30 – 16:30 (Moscow)

Retailers in Russia are feeling the pain of declining disposable income and the effect of lockdown measures, with pressure on their margins and a lack of customer traffic. In contrast, those operating in the value segment are thriving. Residential real estate is flying, backed by the state-subsidised mortgage programme, as the pandemic crisis led the population to channel cash into property as a value store. There is a clear sign of e-commerce booming, with online sales growing twice as fast as traditional and proving to be a catalyst for companies to create new ecosystems.
Speakers:
• Anton Elistratov – CEO, member of the Board of Directors, Samolet Group
• Andrei Osnos – Managing Director, Sovcombank
• Ekaterina Sokolova – CFO, member of the Management Board, M.Video
• Vladimir Salakhutdinov – Director of Strategy, X5 Retail Group

• Tom Blackwell, CEO, EM
• Petr Molchanov, Head of Investment Banking, Russia & CIS, Renaissance Capital
